🥔 The Great Potato Adventure

It looked like a totally ordinary morning.

Lili, who was nine, sat curled up with her Nintendo, big headphones over her ears.

Her twelve-year-old brother Leo was at his computer, building towers in Minecraft.

Mum was in the kitchen flipping breakfast, and Dad was in the office, busy with work.

Pip the hedgehog snoozed under the table, and Blaze the parrot dozed on his perch.

But the morning was NOT ordinary. Lili didn't know it yet, but someone had quietly switched her headphones to silent mode — which is why she couldn't hear a single thing Mum was saying.

"Lili! Breakfast!" Mum called. No answer. Lili was too deep in her game.

So Leo did what big brothers do — he shook her chair to get her attention, and bumped her Nintendo right off the table and onto the floor. Lili lost the game she was about to win.

"LEO!" she yelled. And just like that, the two of them were fighting.

"Stop it, both of you!" said Mum. Then Dad came out of the office. "Breakfast's ready," he said. "Come on — let's just get this settled."

What nobody noticed was this: when the Nintendo hit the floor, it cracked... and that crack sent a tiny secret signal — zzzt — far, far away.

Down, down, down — at the very bottom of the ocean, in a glowing cave, the signal arrived. And someone was waiting for it.

He was a potato. A flying potato dressed like a ninja, spinning a pair of potato nunchucks. And he was EVIL.

"It worked!" he laughed. "My plan is beginning! Soon every person on Earth will play video games forever — and never, ever eat breakfast again!" It was the broken Nintendo that had switched on his whole plan. The fight at breakfast had mattered after all.

The family sat down and ate breakfast together. And that's when the Nintendo on the floor began to buzz and vibrate.

A huge, swirling portal burst open in the middle of the kitchen. The walls, the table, the breakfast — everything stopped, then twisted and turned into a strange, mythical world. And before anyone could grab the doorframe...

WHOOSH. The whole family was pulled inside the video game.

Lili and Leo were still arguing — they didn't even notice the world had changed, until Mum and Dad pointed around them.

"Wait," said Lili, looking up. "This is the video game I was just playing!"

And then their clothes began to change — and so did something deeper inside them. Each of them had a power.

Dad stamped his foot and the ground rumbled — he had Earth power, and his tie became a cape, his coffee mug glowing.

Mum lifted her hand and the air swirled — she had Wind power, with a golden battle-cloak and a frying-pan shield.

Leo clenched his fists and sparks crackled — he had Fire power, in blocky diamond-blue armour with a pickaxe that could break anything.

But Lili? Lili got her glowing silver armour and her stylus-sword... and when she tried to feel her power — nothing happened. She felt scared. "Why don't I have a power?" she whispered.

Even the pets had been pulled in! Pip the hedgehog could now curl into a super-fast spiky speed-ball, and Blaze the parrot burst into bright flame-coloured feathers that lit up the dark and shot little sparks.

Suddenly an army of tall, crispy French Fry Guards came marching, each holding a little ketchup-blaster. "By order of the Great Potato — surrender and play forever!" they shouted.

Lili looked at Leo. Leo looked at Lili. They were still a little mad... but they both knew what they had to do.

"Truce?" said Leo.

"Truce," said Lili. "Let's mash some fries."

Working as a TEAM, the family used their powers.

Dad raised stone walls with his earth to block the ketchup-blasts.

Mum's wind swept whole rows of fries off their feet.

Leo's fire melted the locked doors.

Pip rolled circles around the guards, and Blaze swooped overhead, lighting the way and scouting the path.

And Lili led them deeper and deeper — even without a power, she was the bravest of all — level after glowing level, all the way down to the ocean cave.

There he was, floating in the air, spinning his nunchucks. "You'll never beat me!" the potato laughed. And he was strong — too strong. His nunchucks knocked Dad's earth walls to dust, blew past Mum's wind, and snuffed out Leo's fire. One by one, the family was knocked back.

Lili tried the restart — she tapped her stylus-sword three times — but it wasn't enough. She felt small and alone.

Then her family gathered close around her.

"You don't need to do this by yourself," said Dad, and his earth power flowed into her.

"We're with you," said Mum, and her wind power swirled into her.

"You've got this, sis," said Leo, and his fire power blazed into her.

And as Lili felt how much her family loved her — how much they cared, and how much she cared about them — a warm light began to glow in her chest. It grew brighter and brighter. The earth, the wind, and the fire all spun together inside her and became something brand new: pure Energy — the Ultimate Power.

This was Lili's wonder power all along. It didn't come from armour or a sword. It came from her love and caring — and it only woke up when her family stood together.

Glowing from head to toe, Lili raised her stylus-sword high. "Game over, Potato," she said — and hit the final RESTART.

A wave of bright energy washed through the cave. The potato spun faster and faster — "Nooo, not the reset!" — until poof! He turned back into a plain, ordinary, harmless little potato, sitting on the cave floor.

The portal opened, and the family tumbled back into their kitchen, right where they'd started. The Nintendo was fixed. Breakfast was still warm. And best of all — Lili and Leo weren't fighting anymore.

"You saved everyone, Lili," said Mum.

"No," said Lili, smiling at all of them. "We did. Teamwork."

"Teamwork," said Leo. "Want to play a game together later? A real one?"

"Yeah," said Lili. "Just... no potatoes this time."

And they all sat down and ate breakfast together — the happiest family in any world, real or video game. THE END.
